Dal (lentil soup)

Today I am more then excited to share with you my mother's recipe of a Pakistani/Indian classic lentil recipe which she makes in a pressure cooker in no time and believe me I haven't eaten Dal anywhere better than what she cooks, not even in a restaurant! This dish is usually served with rice but you can eat it with a spoon as well. Also Dal is topped up with seasoned hot oil called Tardka which makes it taste even better! So let's begin!

  1. Half cup of yellow lentils (mung)
  2. Half cup of red lentils (masoor)
  3. 1 liter water
  4. 1 tbsp salt
  5. 1 tbsp red chili powder
  6. 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  7. 1 tbsp coriander powder
  8. 1/2 tbsp all spice (garam masala)
  9. 1 tbsp garlic paste
  10. 2 green chilies
  11. 1 chicken cube (without this you can add more salt, msg and red chili powder)
  12. 1 tsp vinegar

INGREDIENTS for Tardka (hot oi with seasoning, added while serving:

  1. 100 ml vegetable oil
  2. 2 tbsp cumin seeds
  3. 1 tbsp garlic paste or chopped
  4. 3 green chilies with a slit in the middle
  5. Dried red chilies- 5

  1. In your pressure cooker add all the ingredients mentioned. close it up.
  2. cook on high flame till you hear the whistle.
  3. cook for 6 more minutes of until it is cooked but doesn't totally disappear. (The cooking time in pressure cooker varies according to the height of area that you're living in)
  4. Then carefully remove the knob and then the lid.
  5. Cook for a minute on medium then turn off the heat.
  6. now in frying pan add all the Turdka ingredients and cook for 2-3 minutes and spill it over your dal in the serving bowl.
  7. Serve hot with rice and pickles.
